Dit jaar wordt op 21 en 22 maart het Holi-Phagwa-feest gevierd. Het Holifeest of Holi-Phagwa of gewoon 'Phagwa, Phagawa', is een Hindoestaans feest dat jaarlijks gevierd wordt en in feite een combinatie is van een lentefeest, verlossingsfeest en een nieuwjaarsfeest. Volgens het Gregoriaanse kalender wordt het in het voorjaar gevierd, op de dag na de vollemaan van de maan maand chaitra. Op de dag van de vollemaan vindt Holikadahan plaats. Bastantpanchami, Shivaratri, Holikadahan en Holi vinden alle plaats in de hindu jaargetij Basant.
Het holifeest kenmerkt zich door culturele dans, – zang, versnaperingen en het strooien met (vaak rood en geel) gekleurd poeder en parfum (Goellaal en Abier).
Binnen de jaargetijde van de hindu worden de voorbereidingen van de holi gestart op de dag van Basantpanchami, de vijfde dag van het jaargetij Basant in de maan maand Phaalguna. In de Phaalguna maand staat de zon op de dag van Makarsankranti op de evenaar en beweegt naar het noorden, dit houdt in dat het noordelijke halfrond verder opgewarmd wordt door de zon. Op de dag van Basantpanchami wordt een zaad (Rearh plant, een exotische plant) op een vaste lokatie (holka) geplant. Hierbij wordt er gebeden en worden er ceremoniele offers gebacht voor voorspoed. Dit is ook de tijd dat na gebeden en lofzang aan god, de landbouw gronden worden ingezaaid en andere diciplines de voorbereidingen treffen voor het komend jaar. De hele maand wordt door de volksgemeente, droog en brandbaar plantaardigmateriaal verzameld waarmee de holka wordt opgebouwd. Ook is een ieder in de gemeente actief bij het beleven van de aankomende holifeest die d.m.v. culturelezang, huizelijke-, kleding- en andere voorbereidingen is ingeluid tijdens het Basantpanchami.
Voorafgaand aan het holi houden hindoes tijdens de vollemaan in de maan maand chaitra een ceremonie, holkadahan bij de holka waarbij ze symbolisch de Holka verbranden, (bouwsel van stro, riet en takken, stengels en droog hout), daarbij wordt ook handenvol rijst in het vuur geoffert. Dit geldt als een symbolische verdrijving van het kwaad in de vorm van dwalingen, kwade gedachten en gewoonten. De ceremonie holikadahan houdt gebed (pooja) en lofzang (chautal, hori, oelahra, belwara, jhoemar, baiswara, ledj, rasia, bhartal, dhamari, chahaka, kabier en jogira) in. Het culturele volkszang kan de hele nacht doorgaan. Het Holi feest wordt aangevangen nadat het as van de Holka is afgekoeld en de priester, 'Pandit', van de volksgemeenschap de ochtenddienst heeft uitgevoerd bij de Holka. Het as, vibhuti, dhoer, raakhi, van de Holka wordt dan ook als heilig door de hindu gekenmerkt.
Men wenst elkaar bij dit feest "Subh Holi!" toe, wat zoveel wil zeggen als 'Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!'. Met het inluiden van Holi in 2007 viert de hindu het begin van het hindu jaar 2064.
